iOS 13 – 3 months later – Review and Follow Up

hi everyone Aaron here for ZolloTech &
iOS 13 has been out for believe it or not about 90 days now it may have been
out a little bit longer than that by the time you’re watching this but it’s hard
to believe that it’s been out only three months or so because if you’ve been
following the betas we’ve seen it since June and knew all of the features except
for a few that Apple added a little bit later but we knew all of the features
knew the changes and I’m going to do a quick recap of a lot of those features
but this is going to be a little bit different as far as a 90 days later or a
follow-up video because when it comes to this particular video not only will we
talk about the experience I’ve had the features and things like that but we’re
going to talk about your experience based off a YouTube community poll that
I did that has about 20,000 votes at this point and hundreds of comments so I
really appreciate all of that we’ll talk about some of the comments at the end
like a typical follow up video that I do just maybe not as many comments now the
first thing is all of the features we are pretty quick to forget all of the
features that were included with this particular update so let me run down
some of the major ones and the first one is dark mode we can switch between dark
mode and light mode we have that black background many of us were wanting for a
very long time and we finally got that we also have major changes to the Photos
app huge updates to accessibility for people that need things for people that
aren’t able to touch their screens and voiceover all sorts of things voice
control we also have that quickpath keyboard so we can swipe to text that’s
really nice we have redesigned reminders or redesigned carplay shortcuts was
added to the phone permanently we also have find my that they installed and
took the place of find my friends and find my iphone we have major updates to
maps especially in the United States we have a huge security updates and much
much more and let’s not forget iPad OS because iPad OS is a whole other thing
where they completely changed it and gave us file support and other things as
well so there’s been a lot of really great features but with all of those
features that came a lot of bugs in fact there have been a ton of bugs in this
particular update especially early on and with the bait as we expect that in
June but in September when they released it it was definitely not ready and we
have seen more updates with this update than we’ve seen in the past with any iOS
update and what I mean by that is we are currently on iOS 13 point three for our
devices and we didn’t get 12.3 last year until May so just keep that in mind we
have had a ton of updates now I’m glad apples fixing those but we’re going to
talk about some of the bugs that we’ve had now some of the bugs I’ve personally
had since the beginning are issues with Wi-Fi LTE switching from Wi-Fi to LTE so
I’ve had all sorts of issues with that I’ve talked about extensively I’ve also
had issues especially early on with mail that was a big problem Ram management
was another one where you’d go into an app and it would reload in fact that may
still be an issue it’s not right there but sometimes it’s an issue and it was
such a big issue for awhile Apple actually acknowledged it and then fixed
it early on I had a ton of app crashes I also had problems with touch
responsiveness specifically on iPad OS they fixed that finally for me but some
of you still have it and much much more many people have had issues with battery
and we’ll talk about that in a little bit now one thing that seems to be
pretty common that we see over and over is every other year Apple adds stability
so they’ll add features then they’ll add stability then features then stability
and so just to my left here off the screen I have the previous years they
had stability this device has iOS 12 on it and iOS 12 still had the 3d touch
that we all know and love and a lot of people really miss that feature haptic
touch just isn’t doing it for them so that’s something to keep in mind that’s
very different than others and unfortunately with the new phones
because of the way the displays are made there’s no longer that true 3d touch
that’s pressure sensitive and a lot of you missed that including myself have to
touch works just fine but it’s slower and just not as nice it’s not as fluid
as we expect from Apple and then prior to that iOS 11 was absolutely terrible
that was one of the buggiest versions of iOS we’ve
up until iOS 11 and iOS 10 was considered much better than that and
this device has iOS 10 on it iPhone 6 and you can see that if I swipe up here
we’ve got the old control center and so the stability of iOS 10 was great it
brought some different features and it looks a lot different and it even had a
different battery management so if we go into settings a wafer to load go to
battery and battery percentage was there we didn’t have battery health but we did
have usage so you’ll see usage here was gives us usage and standby time however
that was not accurate so Apple changed it and I know a lot of people really
loved the usage time but it wasn’t accurate as to actual screen on time and
that’s why they changed it but it’s nice to see one of these older devices it’s
kind of interesting to go back and look at it and see what they did before I
actually prefer this style control center I know many people like this one
because of its usability and I got used to it but I still miss this one in
particular I really liked it but these devices still aged well and the good
thing is with iOS 13 and I think almost everyone agrees is that on older devices
such as the iPhone well maybe this would be the exception in iPhone 7 this is
someone else’s device but this one I would say is probably maybe the only
exception to this performance is fantastic for older devices on iOS 13
most people would say that with previous versions it seems like Apple almost got
caught slowing it down when there were battery issues replace the battery and
it would fix it but they’ve greatly increased performance for older devices
with iOS 13 so if you compare some of the older ones maybe a phone that came
with iOS 10 and was upgraded to iOS 12 and then 13 it’s much faster so maybe
we’ll talk about that in a future video but with this particular update came a
lot of bugs and there’s still a lot of bugs but a lot of people also say that
iOS 13 point three is quite good and fixed most issues with the exception of
battery life now out of all the comments that I saw on the YouTube community poll
74 people said that this was bug infested iOS 13 was bug infested but
most loved better performance overall and in older
devices also most people actually said they would prefer to stay on iOS 13 even
though it was a little bit more buggy because of things like dark mode and all
of the features that they gained so I thought that was pretty interesting not
many people wanted to roll back to iOS 12 with the exception of gaining 3d
touch back or having less bugs so it’s pretty interesting people prefer
features over having to deal with bugs however a lot of people said that it was
worse than iOS 12 as well because of all those bugs so that was kind of expected
but a lot of people I think some of the comments that kind of surprised me the
most was a lot of people said that battery was better than iOS 12 but then
others say it’s worse so it’s pretty hit or miss and I thought that was pretty
interesting I did not expect people to say that
battery was better although I actually find it to be about the same but I’m on
different devices all the time so that may not be a fair comparison but for me
consistently I’m usually getting about 10 to 12 hours of screen on time on the
iPhone 11 Pro Max so I see that pretty consistently but I know a lot of you
don’t and it just depends on what apps you’re using and things like that
if you uninstall facebook and you don’t have it installed I bet you see a big
jump once you want to install it strangely now in June we’re going to see
iOS 14 for the first time if Apple holds true to tradition we’ll see it in June
and then we’ll see a release in September with the new iPhones and I
would expect iOS 14 to have major stability updates and I think we’re
going to see more stability in the future based off what they’re actually
changing internally to make sure i OS is more stable and the way teams work
together to make sure stability is key so I think we’ll see that iOS 14 should
definitely be a lot better so maybe we’ll see less features but we’ll see a
greater stability and hopefully that’s the case I really look forward to that
but let’s talk about your experience with the YouTube community poll because
I was really impressed with how many people responded and I really appreciate
it so currently there’s a poll about iOS 13 point three point one beta one but
let’s take a look at 13 after 90 days now as you can see there
19k votes so almost twenty thousand votes or so they don’t tell you in
between and this kind of amazed me the statistic sixty seven percent of you
said it’s much better than older versions so you find iOS 13 much better
than iOS 12 or 11 or 10 and then 14 percent of you said I like it the same
as iOS 12 13 percent of you said iOS 13 is much worse and 6 percent of you just
never updated whether that be you’re on an older device or you just didn’t want
to do it you wanted to do something else with your device
now there’s 273 comments and I will read a few of them not going to read as many
as I did before but I did take all of these comments put them in a document so
I can take a look at them read them all and then compiled that information I
shared before so I really appreciate all these comments even the people that have
Android phones I appreciate the comments I didn’t have enough options to keep
putting in more things so I wanted to keep it relevant to iOS with this video
but you’ll see people like Marty here said some of the features are nice but
it’s so bug infested compared to iOS 12 and inconsistent compared to iOS 6 and
that’s something I didn’t mention is iOS is fairly inconsistent and I understand
what you mean in some places in some Apple apps things are consistent things
work the same way and then in some other Apple apps they work differently so it’s
really something I’d like to see change and I’m sure they will at this point
they know they’re being inconsistent they’ll fix this and then you’ll see
someone like Matthew here says I love iOS 13 my favorite version since iOS 7
dark mode in the volume hutter my favorite features if only we had a new
call screen and haptic keyboard it would be perfect so a lot of you I know want a
new call screen where maybe it pops down sort of like Android does instead of
taking up the whole screen now let’s take a look at a few others AJ says I’m
satisfied with iOS 13 but not at all with battery life on my iPhone se so
again you’ll see more and more people are saying battery life if you read
through these you can go to the community and look at it as well Tim
said I love the new features and would never go back especially on the iPad
it’s like night and day I’m okay with some tiny bugs here and
there if I can have these awesome features on the other hand fear us I’m
not sure if I’m saying that properly but I apologize if I’m not I owe s 13 for
the most part has been stable however there has been several bugs where it
came out luckily it has gotten better over time and then Stephen said iOS 12
is way better it says way better to me and less app
crashes and it’s way smoother than iOS 13 and I think that’s the exception most
people would say iOS 13 has much better performance in fact that’s something
they focused on a lot you’ll see Rodrigo here says iPhone 7 plus the feature set
is really complete and well-rounded gotta love dark mode but it’s for
stability and performance three months in it has been way worse there are still
many issues they have to iron out and I think most would agree with that well
take a look at a few more here Kuan says honestly at this point it looks like
it’s finally stable before all the crap from iOS 11 and 12 and again this is
very specific to the device you’re using some devices are super stable some
aren’t more teza has said i’m on iphone 7 io s 13.3 and it’s better than iOS 12
the only thing I have is problems with its battery life it’s bad at the screen
off time I have nothing in the background battery health a hundred
percent new battery George said hello Aaron the problem with iOS 13 is the
music app the music player loads music slowly it seems that there is a gap of
one second when selecting a song and when scrolling through a song I always
have to wait one second before the song starts playing again it’s a weird bug
one that I dislike a lot and that disrupts my musical experience it’s the
only reason I stayed on iOS 12 point for point one on my 6s Omar says iOS 12 was
very stable Iowa’s 13 has been buggy but Apple has constantly patched it so they
are listening I’m on the fence about which is better Marlene said battery has
been much better using iOS 13 on my iPhone 8 plus than the former versions
of iOS of iOS which again I found that to be pretty surprising but a lot of
people say that and then let’s take a look at one more we’ve got two more here
sue said dark mode is my favorite but nothing else excites me also causing my
battery health to go down be on iOS 13 I don’t know why and battery Hal
is going to go down regularly that’s not a feature or a problem with iOS 13
battery just degrades over time I really dislike that Apple shows this actually
shows the percentage I wish they just say it’s good or bad because it’s going
to degrade no matter what you do that’s just the nature of lithium-ion batteries
and that’s it for all of the comments now I think iOS 13 is going to get
better it’s definitely going to improve by the time iOS 14 comes out Apple will
continue to improve it but I definitely would expect a better stability with iOS
14 but let me know what you think about all of these things that people have
said in the comments below of course I’ll link this wallpaper in
the description as I always do and if you haven’t subscribed already please
subscribe and if you enjoyed the video please give it a like as always thanks
for watching this is Aaron I’ll see you next time
